Vincent Van Gogh (Born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30,1853; Died on July 29, 1890.) He was the son of a pastor which caused him to be raised in a religious culture. Around his early twenties he decided to become an artist through the influence of color in which he felt was his chief symbol of expression. The way Van Gogh painted was very unusual during the late 1800s because he focused much on colorful abstract art. Van Gogh has many paintings that has broaden the view on art. His paintings weren't appreciated during his lifetime due to a case of mental illness possibly bipolar disorder. However they are now considered to be the most well appreciated forms of art in the world today.

 Steps



  1. Learn about the artistic style of expressionism. When looking at the art work, you need to understand the style of painting because his paintings were very unique compared to other paintings. In Van Gogh's artwork, the style that he used was expressionism.
  2. Look for key symbols or signs that would help you understand his art work better such as the context of the objects.
  3. Try to understand the artist's intentions. You can do this by observing the use of colors, patterns, brush strokes, and the theme of the painting. Knowing the artist's intention you would be able to conclude the motives behind the art. Explore the night and the night sky. Try to observe the colors of the night to get a better understanding of some of Van Gogh's most well known works such as the Starry Night and Starry Night Over the Rhone River.
  4. Take what you have learned from the art work and apply it to your emotions to see how it effects and relates to you. This would allow you to make a connection with the artist.

  • Go to an art gallery and try to compare Vincent Van Gogh's work with other paintings to see why his work was so different.
  • Always keep in mind that there are many other famous art works besides Van Gogh that may have a larger impact on you.
