Louisiana Swamp Painting

Of all my paintings at All Posters.com this Louisiana Swamp painting gets the most views although they have yet to sell a print there. I like it so much I have kept it in my private collection and it hangs around in my studio. I move it from time to time so I can see it. Some years ago I drove around Ponchatoula, Louisiana and took pictures. I did a lighthouse that sold to a lighthouse painting collector, a few flowering plants and this swamp scene. I did it on heavy paper with water based Gouache paints. I like they way they flow like finger paints and it gives this swamp painting its unique look.
I think AllPosters.com does not make the effort Zazzle does to sell prints as Zazzle has sold this painting as a print and on cards. Although on the web AllPosters.com markets itself more. Here is the link to the above print- http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Louisiana-Swamp-Posters_i3139229_.htm And they sell more of my paintings there. Below is the image on Zazzle with its link too, just in case you like the Zazzle print better.

My Life An Oyster, My Love A Pearl
My Life An Oyster, My Love A Pearl Magnet http://ow.ly/1qhFf
Growing up I ate a lot of oysters. My grandfather after being injured became an oyster shucker for local restaurants. he would bring home oysters often. Then as a family we would buy oysters by the sack and open them up, eat some raw and make many different oyster dishes. I developed a fondness for fresh Louisiana oysters back then that continues to today. My art reflects the influence of me growing up in New Orleans. Here are some comical designs. Click the image to see the design and price.

Crawfish, What's In A Name
That Old Crawfish: What’s In The Name? Blog info on word "Crawfish" http://ow.ly/ixB9 #cajun #crawfish #nola

The word "Crawfish " comes from the Cajun French word "escrevisse". Many places use other names, crayfish, crawdad, mudbug but we here in Louisiana prefer "crawfish". No matter what it is called it is a favorite food in spring. Boiled Crawfish with corn, potatoes, garlic, sausage and more is served at many family picnic or back yard party. I am told the real scientific name is Astacoidea Cambardae and there are over 300 types in North America alone, a big family even by Cajun standards. The art of boiling them was covered in another blog entry but it is easy just get any of the boiling spice packages from Rex or Zatarain's and follow the directions. To make it real fancy people add in corn on the cob, and other veggies that boil well, even artichokes. Whatever you like add in the boiling water and have friends over.
One time I even wrote a fable about a Cajun Mermaid, part crawfish part woman on how the first Cajun ate the beautiful red swamp crawfish.

I use the crawfish too in many of my gift designs sold on the web at http://www.cafepress.com/figstreetstudio/596208 I would think along with the Fleur De Lis, the Crawfish is a symbol of Louisiana. See the Fleur De Marais design here: http://www.cafepress.com/figstreetstudio/5246408

By whatever name it is called it is a fun delicious food found in the swamps of South Louisiana, the swamps we must all protect as they once protected us.
