Pig Squatch Shirt

A large Russian Boar estimated to be near 600 ponds was shot in the swamp near my place in Pearl River. I designed a t-shirt about it. The story goes a fellow was walking with his pet dog in the swamp when the hog attacked his dog. Only armed with a 22 pistol he shot the hog several times as he ran away. The hog died but his dog was killed.

Tooker's Camp at Indian Village Landing

Tooker's Camp at Indian Village Landing, link to blog story- Camp Painting

One of the main attractions at Indian Village along the West Pearl River near Slidell, LA was “Tooker’s Camp”. Tooker was a colorful fellow for a local town who had a made up hot tub on his front porch and a stop sign. Of that collection of photos I got around to painting his camp but made it up as a starry night with a fried egg moon. Like a Van Gogh. Tooker would have liked it that way. The painting is sold as prints, cards, tiles, and many gift items

All around the Indian Village Landing are camps used as weekend homes to people who love to fish. Catfish are plentiful there and good times had by many local people who drive and boat in to stay the weekend. As I would canoe there I took pictures then painted a few camps, Tooker's is my favorite fishing camp painting.
The camps and area were also used in a music video by Sheryl Crow.

Catching Crawfish In Roadside Ditch

I laughed at a comment made recently in a forum when a lady stated she would never eat a crawfish taken from a ditch. Growing up that is the only place we would crawfish, large ditches full of plants as the critters eat decaying plant matter. Later on when I was old enough to pilot a pirogue I could get deeper into the swamp, not a big ditch and a lot more work to get to. Roadside ditches throughout Louisiana were the best spots to crawfish on a Saturday morning. Nets made of heavy wire in a four sided tripod shape, chicken necks, or better yet 'Smelt" were used as bait. I am not sure what 'Smelt' was or is but it did do just that, smelled. I understand today there is a lure or sauce that has an odor crawfish love and you can spray on raw meat to help attract them. I remember the old days, sitting in a lawn chair along a side road with buckets, a cooler of soft drinks, a bamboo pole for setting out and taking in the nets placed in the ditch. A good morning and you have several buckets full of fresh from the ditch crawfish to boil that afternoon. Boiling them is an art. Beginning with the 'purge', a bath of sorts in clean water in a large wash tub, then the propane boiler rig, and the Louisiana spices plus whatever vegetables you want to add, like garlic, onions, potatoes, corn, and a few lemons. Each family has its own special recipe for boiling seafood and most keep it close. Never forget the salt, the boil doesn't go well without a lot of salt in the water. Lucky for new comers the Louisiana spice packages have a good recipe to how to boil.

My experiences growing up in Louisiana shows itself in my art. I make a lot of crawfish designs and crawfish cartoons and sell them at my Fig Street Studio shop on the web both at Zazzle and Cafe Press .

Louisiana has plenty to offer in the way of seafood and places to fish and unique seafood caught even in a road side ditch. Read the fable of the Cajun Mermaid, a comical crawfish story, at this link: http://www.figstreet.com/tshirts/cajunmermaid.htmlPeace Love Crawfish Peace Love Crawfish Designs too!

Nutria Protest Evictions

Long before man made concrete paths and brick huts along the bayou small critters lived peacefully along the banks. With the explosion of human beings moving into the once tranquil swamps the locals are being evicted some by gun point. The Nutria are responding with a campaign, of sorts, to get attention to their plight. Asking to move out is one thing but telling people to eat you and being shot at is another. Nutria are now selling shirts and gift items saying, 'Eat Humans, Not Nutria' and more importantly, 'Save The Marsh'. With more marsh land available more Nutria would have a safe place to live. Help the cause, buy a funny shirt see for details, http://www.cafepress.com/figstreetstudio/700091

For almost a dozen years now, SWAT team snipers have been hunting the hordes of nutria that have made their home in Jefferson Parish's drainage canals.
