Cajun French for Who Dat
Cajun French for Who Dat on shirt- http://ow.ly/11L4o
With all the fuss about Who Dat? in the news I designed this Cajun French shirt for us in Louisiana. In fact I am the first to use the French for Who Dat on a shirt, so I guess I need to protect it with copyright and trademark before the NFL claims it too.
Cest Bon!
In mid December I received a letter from a lawyer saying to stop selling Who Dat as his client, the NFL had rights to it. They included the French version. I had to stop selling for a while as I researched the facts. As it turns out about 20 people since 1980 have registered Who Dat in several places and none have any real claim to it, especially in Cajun French. The phase I made up to represent Who Dat isn't the best French but it maintains the spirit of Who Dat. Now even a US Senator says Who Dat belongs to the people of Louisiana no corporations. So my shirts and gifts are back on sale. Follow this link to see them- http://www.zazzle.com/figstreetstudio/dat+gifts

Who Dat Shirts
Who Dat, a chant sung by black faced ministrials since the 1920's was adopted by the New Orleans fans and now is the cry heard around the globe over the fight for who has dat right to use dat slogan. As the chant and song have been in the public domain for many years before the football team that now claims it as its trademark, no one person owns the rights to Who Dat!
Here are some Who Dat shirts from a local artist.
From- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Dat%3F
Who Dat Has Been Around A Long Time
"The chant of "Who Dat?" originated in minstrel shows and vaudeville acts of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and was then taken up by jazz and big band performers in the 1920s and 30s."
In the swing era, "who dat" chants back and forth between the band and the band leader or between the audience and the band were extemporaneous. That is, there was no one specific set of words except for the two magic ones.
"Who Dat?" Lyrics from 1937:
Who dat up there who’s dat down there
Who dat up there who dat well down there
Who’s dat up there, sayin’ who’s dat down there
When I see you up there well who’s dat down there
Who dat inside who’s dat outside
Who’s dat inside who dat well outside
Who’s dat inside, singin’ who’s dat outside
When I see up there well who’s dat out there
Button up your lip there big boy
Stop answerin’ back
Give you a tip there big boy
Announce yourself jack
Who dat up there who’s dat down there
Who dat up there who dat, well down there
Who’s dat up there, singin’ who’s dat down there
When I see you up there you bum
Well who’s dat down there
Who dat
Staged minstrel skits had frightened black people saying "who dat" when they encountered a ghost, or someone imitating a ghost. Then, the "who dat"..."who dat say who dat"...skit would play itself out. This skit was done frequently in short reels from the 1930s - 1950s and in some early TV shows too. Even the Marx Brothers had a "who dat" routine, which they included in their film A Day at the Races."

REMOVED
The Foundation claims to have trademark "Jazz Fest", which is a common phrase used for festivals all over the world. I seriously doubt it would hold up in Court. I am not rich enough to file suit. The Foundation has bullied printers, artists, and common folk with notice they will sue for use. Thus ZAZZLE removed any design with the phrase and some with just the words, Jazz and Fest separately. Thus hundreds of my long term designs are no longer for sale there and at other places. I have revised some designs. And will revise more. I think the Foundation is not considering New Orleans heritage with those actions. But the common folk cannot fight back those overly rich folks.
