Highway 61 Blues Art

US Highway 61 runs from New Orleans to Memphis. Music and people traveled that highway up from New Orleans finally to Chicago, some to escape the heat others oppression. For whatever reason stopping in the cotton fields south of Memphis the Blues was born. Some say the Jazz from New Orleans combined with the slave songs of the cotton fields and from that a new music evolved, the Blues. Today things are different, no one rides a bus or car as much and big hotels are near but for sure the music still lives there along with the old stories. I used to visit often but since Katrina have had little time to run up the highway for a visit. I do cherish the area and have art dedicated to it on my web page. New Orleans Street Performers

New Orleans Tarot Card Readers:




Street performing is associated historically with the Gypsies. Several Gypsy fortune tellers man the Tarot Card Reading Tables in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Mostly known for the Street Art, New Orleans has many fortune tellers, street musicians, and other street performers. Usually they perform for tips. Most are allowed to perform for free but painters are forced to get a license and sell only original paintings. Because they sell an object sales tax must be collected.
The street performers are interesting subjects for artists and I have painted some on occasion, most recognized is a group of good musicians on Royal St.

Royal St Musicians:New Orleans, French Quarter

Throughout the French Quarter are Street Musicians who play day and night. Many are regulars for years and excellent musicians. I painted the banjo player years ago but you can see musicians playing there today and everyday. Music fills the streets of the Quarter.
