Day At The USMC Museum

Official emblem of Officers in the United Stat...Image via Wikipedia

I spent the better part of a day at the United States Marine Corps Museum near Woodbridge, VA. A great spot to learn the history of the USMC and some interesting lore. Especially interesting was meeting a class of Marines also attending and learning there, very good young men from acorss the nation. Displays were educational and historical. A meaningful experience.

Tezcuco Cottage Print

This was believed to be the old kitchen at Tezcuco Plantation, Burnside, La. Painted by New Orleans artist JK Schwehm in 2001 before the plantation burned to the ground.

Tezcuco Plantation Info
From the old web page. "Tezcuco Plantation is another of the plantations that serve as a B&B. It is a gracious raised cottage, Greek Revival in style with elaborate wrought iron trimmed galleries, ornate friezes and medallions. It is one of the last built before the Civil War and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our 'room' was not a room at all but a complete building built in 1855. Let me explain: in back of the master house are rows of small out buildings that were used for all sorts of things, and these are used for the guests of today. The one we had at one time had been the quarters of the older bachelor boys of the family before they went off on their own."

From "Sothern Living" before it burned-
"Tezcuco Plantation
A raised cottage surrounded by a white picket fence is but the tip of Tezcuco Plantation. Built in 1855 of cypress and brick, the home is surrounded by formal gardens, brick paths, a chapel, blacksmith shop, commissary museum, and a small village of bed-and-breakfast cottages. Giant oaks form a canopy over the front yard, which leads to River Road."
