Unlike the disputes over crabs with to steam or to boil everyone agrees boiling crawfish in well seasoned water is the way to go. Add in corn, potatoes, and garlic, or sausage and any veggie you like makes for a meal. Seems the crawfish boil is world wide now with Ikea sponsoring them in Europe and USA. Party hats, shirts, decorations are the thing in Europe but the emphasis here in the Gulf Coast of the USA is food and eating over decorations. Alligator: What's In The Name

The earliest use of the word alligator that appears in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (First Folio, 1623):

"In his needie shop a tortoyrs hung,/An Allegater stuft."

Originally from the Spanish description, el lagarto, "the lizard," then evolved over years of usage to the modern word. Often thought of as "seafood" as it lives in the waters of the south it is meat and a taboo to eat in some cultures. Not for the Cajuns of South Louisiana. Prepared well it is compared to chicken, fried, stewed, or grilled like steak.
I use the alligator in my art. As I canoe I have seen, run into, and avoided alligators on many occasions. I also as a Chef had the opportunity to visit an alligator butcher in the bayous of Louisiana and witnesses from live to cut into parts on several occasions. To celebrate the Alligator and South Louisiana I have designed the above Alligator Fleur de Lis, sold on shirts and gifts at my art studio.

I take a lot of photos of places I love in my city. I grew up walking in City Park and hanging out around this Stone Bridge. I have painted it in acrylics a few times. I use the photos I take to paint from. In the above picture I recently took I used software to make a new fall composition to paint at a later date. This computer generated composition came out so interesting I put it on a greeting card. As my time is limited it may be a while until I get to paint it so I now have it to enjoy to then.

Mid City Garage Studio

Just completed another place to paint. I spend a lot of time in the city so I have converted a garage into a small studio space for me to paint in while in New Orleans. My bigger studio in the country is nice but often I stay in the city and now can also paint there. It is located in Mid City right off Canal and the streetcar line so people are welcome to visit when I am there just contact me first. I am back and forth between both place but not on a regular schedule so knowing when I am available is the key to any visit. So you know it is a small studio spot for painting, nothing elaborate or impressive. I leave the impression to the art and not the space.

I also park my scooter in the garage studio, multi purpose place.

Sometime ago for a friend I designed them a special shirt as they were from Chicago. I do this as an exercise in design to see how well it goes. Since then this design has sold a lot on my store on the web. Also a Philadelphia Cheese Steak design I did for a guy in Florida who opened up a sandwich shop. Although I am based in New Orleans and have a lot of New Orleans themed designs I do not limit myself. If the request is something I have time to do I will do it. I enjoy creating art sometimes just for the sake of art.

In New Orleans the coffee is blended with chicory, a ground root used to extend the coffee. Some say it makes the coffee taste stronger. Many coffee shops have come and gone in New Orleans but Café du Monde has stayed for well over 100 years. I wonder if Starbucks will last that long. The key is the special doughnuts. French style pastries called "Beignets". As an artist I celebrate my life growing up in New Orleans by painting and creating icons of my city. The coffee and doughnuts have become a part of that culture and part of my art. I have them on posters, cards, invitations, shirts and more. I was standing in a check out line speaking to a lady who was buying some Chinese made art prints. I told her I was a local artist and would love for her to get my art made in America to hang rather then some copy cat Chinese sold prints. I offered to sign them too if she contacted me. She said she would but local art was so expensive. I explained I sell postcards and greeting cards in sizes that fit in picture frames sold at Wall Mart for $5 and the cards are $3, postcards $1 so for under $10 she can have local American art. The discount craft stores too have larger frames for $15 and my prints sell for $5 each so she could have a local art print framed for less then $25. And if she would rather I sell pre-framed prints for under $50. I am willing to sign them to if brought to my studio.

I see no real reason not to buy local art made in America. The prices are low, the sale helps the local economy and not Chinese plants. Look at what I have if you feel you need something different I paint every day and could just paint what you need. Just ask, e-mail me, buy local art, help the local economy.

It serves as a New Orleans office, wedding chapel and I am able to sub-let it to people as a corporate rental when I travel away from New Orleans. How Van Gogh Influences My Art

Art comes from inside through inspiration. As a friend and I discussed "mood" plays a part in my ability to paint. Like music and candles on a romantic evening. Or the sound of rain falling softly on a tin roof during a spring rain shower. The smell of coffee in the morning. Poetry always inspires. For me to get the artistic juices moving on all art projects I need "mood". I visit museums, read books, view art, read poems, play music. One of the best sources are the colorful paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. I have several books of his art and other "Post-Impressionists". After reading and looking through them I then get inspired and use what I learned to paint something of my life, growing up or living now. Places, people, things that have affected me in some way. Hopefully the "mood" that I set comes through in the painting and then affects the viewer. Maybe in a different way but the base of the mood is there, whether it be happy, sad, or whatever.

Take a look at a few of these images. My latest self portrait was inspired by me seeing myself in a mirror when I was dressed one day in a straw hat. It reminded me of Van Gogh yet I could not place how or what of Van Gogh was the "mood". So I did a photograph looked it over and discovered this. (See pictures for comparison.)

Compare what I did above to this Van Gogh painting of "Porträt des alten Bauers Patience Escalier, 1888, Oil on canvas.

See the influence? Yet see the differences too. At first when I saw myself in a mirror I remembered a Van Gogh self portrait of him in a straw hat so I looked in my book but the "mood' was not in that painting. Then I saw "Patients Escalier" and voila I had it and painted it. There are more moments like this in my paintings and I will have to discuss them in another blog post.

As you see this is the painting that first came to mind but it was not the correct one and expresses a different mood. My mind was aware of the similarities of a Van Gogh but consciously I thought this one when it was another deep inside. All I needed was "Patients".

West End Park, Lakeview, New Orleans

Growing up in New Orleans I would play in some of the great parks. In my neighborhood of Lakeview I could ride my bike to West End Park by the Yacht Club. There were shelters to picnic, a big fountain, and band stand for shows on Friday nights. During the day you could play in the park, fish, or my case wonder at where all the boats have been. Places I saw, played, or wondered at are subjects of my art both fine and graphic. This is my memory of West End Park, the Stone Bridge. There are several in New Orleans Parks built during the WPA era. This one is severely damaged now. looks like someone tried to salvage some of the stones as it made it through Katrina OK. I hope people will complain about the damage so it will be repaired. City Park has one sililiar and it was recently repaired. I hope you enjoy my painting of this place of wonder.

After serving as a Justice of the Peace in the Greater New Orleans area I have devised a simple civil wedding vow ceremony that uses the traditional elements yet you can add in personal vows, poems, or other elements from other ceremonie.

Basic Civil Ceremony

Simple Basic Civil Wedding Ceremony

The step which you are about to take is the most important into which human beings can come. It is a union of two people founded upon mutual respect and affection. Your lives will change, your responsibilities will increase, but your joy will be multiplied if you are sincere and earnest with your pledge to one another.
__(Groom)___________, will you have this woman to be your wedded wife, to love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, and forsaking all others, keep you only unto her, for so long as you both shall live?

He has a BA and JD from Louisiana State University (1972) and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from a local Bible Church in 1990. He has performed numerous wedding ceremonies and is available in the Greater New Orleans area to perform your personalized marriage ceremony. Let this be a day of gladness, thanksgiving, possibility, and good fortune for all of us, but especially for (Groom) and (Bride), who are here to renew and celebrate their love.
